United States District Court for the Eastern District of Louisiana
The U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Louisiana (in case citations, E.D. La.) is a federal trial court based in New Orleans. Like all U.S. district courts, the court has original jurisdiction over civil actions arising under the Constitution, laws, and treaties of the United States;〔(28 U.S.C. § 1331 )〕 certain civil actions between citizens of different states;〔(28 U.S.C. § 1332 )〕 civil actions within the admiralty or maritime jurisdiction of the United States;〔(28 U.S.C. § 1333 )〕 criminal prosecutions brought by the United States;〔(18 U.S.C. § 3231 )〕 and many other types of cases and controversies.〔(Title 28, United States Code, Chapter 85 )〕 It also has appellate jurisdiction over a very limited class of judgments, orders, and decrees.〔Under (28 U.S.C. § 158(a)(1) ), for example, the U.S. district courts are authorized to hear appeals from final judgments, orders, and decrees of U.S. bankruptcy judges.〕
Appeals from the Eastern District of Louisiana are taken to the United States Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit (except for patent claims and claims against the U.S. government under the Tucker Act, which are appealed to the Federal Circuit).

This district comprises the following parishes: Assumption, Jefferson, Lafourche, Orleans, Plaquemines, St. Bernard, St. Charles, St. James, St. John the Baptist, St. Tammany, Tangipahoa, Terrebonne and Washington.〔(28 U.S.C. § 98(a) )〕
